Ep 20 – Some Thoughts On Eric Hoffer’s “The True Believer,” Part 1

Join me in this episode as I discuss the very popular Eric Hoffer book The True Believer.  I use a lot of quotations from the book and apply them to many of the situations we find ourselves faced with in modern times.  The True Believer was published in 1951 and is an often recommended work in the realm of mass-movement social psycology.  It’s very accessible compared to most other works on the subject, and that, along with it’s popularity among several historical figures, gives it a place on the top shelf of pop-culture sociology books.  I enjoyed reading it, and I think some of the lessons it offers are very applicable to today’s movements.  I don’t go along with everything Hoffer claims, but even he would say that’s a good thing.

I know it has been a while since the last podcast, but there are some legitimate reasons for that and I briefly discuss everything that has happened at the top of the show.  The next episode of the podcast will be the Part 2/conclusion of my thoughts on The True Believer.  After that I have some discussions planned with some guests, I’ll go over another film, and then I’ll dive into Dr. Jordan Peterson’s new book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, which I’m super excited to read.

Show Update

The recent days have been filled with things from family sicknesses (none of them major), to extra responsibilities at work.  I have been working diligently on the show however, and was very excited to record yesterday, the 20th.  After laying down a few hours of audio for the upcoming episode on The True Believer, my throat went sore.  I was ok though, because I was finished recording… or so I thought.  After transferring the audio file to my editing software I was disheartened to hear a loud buzz in the background that I had no luck filtering out.  The audio was not consistent with the quality I demand, so it’s all garbage.  There was no indication of feedback during recording.  I did some troubleshooting and I think I have the problem sorted out.  A revelation that presented itself during this process was the need to break this show up into smaller parts.  The raw audio was extremely long.  I have decided to make this a multi-part series consisting of at least 2 parts, and possibly 3.  I want to apologize for the delay in getting this show out.  I believe the wait will be worth it however.  I need a couple days to allow my throat to heal, then I will record part 1 of the upcoming episode.  Thank you for your patience.
